Parents of Truants Arrested and Charged in Orange County
The OC Weekly reported 5 people were arrested in what the Orange County District Attorney's office (OCDA) hails as its first case against the parents of children who have been chronically truant despite repeated warnings from cops and schools.
The parents have children in the Magnolia, Orange Unified and Capistrano Unified school districts.
The parents are scheduled to be arraigned in the Central Justice Center in Santa Ana on misdemeanor charges of
contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
Under state law, school-aged children must be enrolled in and attend school. Failure to comply can draw juvenile-court proceedings for children and criminal prosecution for parents.
According to the article, the arrests were carried out by officers from the OCDA, the Orange Police Department, the Orange County Sheriff's Department and the Orange County Probation Department, which are part of the Gang Reduction Intervention Partnership (GRIP), which identifies at-risk youth and aims to increase school attendance and decrease gang activity.
All the parents were arrested after their kids were dropped off at school.
