The LA Times reports a former Riverside police detective was sentenced in Orange County Superior Court to serve nearly a year in the Orange County Jail after pleading guilty to several felonies, including filing a false DUI report.
The former police officer admitted to submitting a false drunk-driving report about the then-Mayor Pro Tem of Costa Mesa, who still sits on the Costa Mesa City Council. Orange County prosecutors contended the ex-cop illegally placed a GPS device on the car and followed the councilman home as he left a bar and restaurant on Newport Boulevard. The ex-cop then called 911 to lie about the councilman driving erratically.
Once pulled over by police, the councilman passed the field sobriety tests and said he had been drinking Diet Coke.
